ZIP Code Finder

A ZIP code is the United States' postal code — five digits that route mail to the right area. Enter one below and this tool returns the city, state and coordinates with a map marker, using the live Zippopotam open database. Try 90210 (Beverly Hills) to see it work.

Use the country dropdown to look up codes for 39 other countries too. Coverage varies by country — if a code returns no match, double-check the digits and confirm with the national postal service. Lookups are free, need no account, and nothing you enter is stored.

How to use this tool

1
Pick the country

The dropdown is pre-set to the United States on this page; switch it to compare postal systems across 39 other countries.

2
Enter the ZIP code

Type the 5-digit ZIP code (the optional 4-digit extension works too) and press Lookup or Enter.

3
Read the result

The tool shows the city, state, latitude/longitude and a map marker. A “not found” message means the code is mistyped or missing from the open database — never a guess.

What people use this tool for

Addressing mail to the US

Confirm a ZIP code before posting letters or parcels so the item reaches the right sorting office — one wrong digit can send it across the country.

Filling in checkout forms

US shops require the ZIP field. Use the lookup to double-check an unfamiliar code before you pay.

Getting coordinates for a ZIP

Each result includes latitude and longitude — handy for dropping a pin, planning a route or labelling locations in a spreadsheet.

How it's calculated

ZIP lookup queries the public Zippopotam API directly from your browser: GET https://api.zippopotam.us/us/{zip-code}. A successful response returns the country, the canonical post code and a list of places, each with place name, state, state abbreviation, latitude and longitude. The widget renders every returned place and drops a marker for each on the map (OpenStreetMap tiles via Leaflet).

If the API returns 404, the tool reports "not found" honestly: the code may be mistyped, or it may simply be absent from this open database. Coverage varies by country, so a missing code is never treated as proof the code is invalid.

No API key or account is needed, and nothing you type is stored on our servers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ZIP code?

The postal code system of the United States — five digits (optionally plus four) that route mail to a delivery area. Enter one here to see the city, state and map coordinates.

Why did my ZIP code return “not found”?

Either a digit is off, or the code is not in the open Zippopotam database — coverage varies by country. Confirm valid ZIP codes with the USPS ZIP code lookup.

Can I look up postal codes for other countries here?

Yes — the country dropdown covers 40 countries. Coverage varies by country, so results depend on how complete each country's data is.

Is this free, and do you store my lookups?

Yes, free and unlimited — and no, your browser queries the Zippopotam API directly; we do not log or keep the codes you enter.
