📍 Geocoding & Lookup

Postal Code Finder

Enter any postal code — a US ZIP, a UK postcode, a Canadian postal code — and this tool returns the place name, state and coordinates with a map marker. The lookup runs live against the open Zippopotam database across 40 countries.

Pick the country from the dropdown first, then type the code. Zippopotam is community-maintained, so coverage varies by country and a valid code can occasionally return no match — when that happens, confirm with the national postal service. Lookups are free and nothing you enter is stored.

How to use this tool

1
Pick the country

Use the dropdown above the input to select which country's postal system you are querying — the format differs per country.

2
Enter the postal code

Type the code as it is normally written in that country (spaces and dashes included) and press Lookup or Enter.

3
Read the result

The tool shows the place name, state, latitude/longitude and a map marker for every locality attached to the code — or an honest “not found” if the database has no record of it.

What people use this tool for

Addressing international mail

Confirm a foreign postal code before posting — formats differ by country, and a quick lookup avoids a returned parcel.

Comparing postal systems

Switch the country dropdown to see how formats differ: 4-digit Australian codes, alphanumeric UK postcodes, 6-digit Indian PIN codes.

Getting coordinates for any postcode

Every result includes latitude and longitude — drop a pin, plan a route or geo-tag a record in one step.

How it's calculated

Postal code lookup queries the public Zippopotam API directly from your browser: GET https://api.zippopotam.us/{country-code}/{postal-code}. A successful response returns the country, the canonical post code and a list of places, each with place name, state, state abbreviation, latitude and longitude. The widget renders every returned place and drops a marker for each on the map (OpenStreetMap tiles via Leaflet).

If the API returns 404, the tool reports "not found" honestly: the code may be mistyped, or it may simply be absent from this open database. Coverage varies by country, so a missing code is never treated as proof the code is invalid — confirm with the relevant national postal service.

No API key or account is needed, and nothing you type is stored on our servers.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries are covered?

The dropdown lists 40 countries. Note that coverage varies by country within the underlying open database — some are comprehensive, others patchy.

What is the difference between a ZIP code and a postal code?

“ZIP code” is the United States' name for its postal code system; most other countries say “postal code” or “postcode”. This tool handles all of them via the country dropdown.

Why did my code return “not found”?

Either the format is off (check spaces and dashes), or the code is missing from the open Zippopotam database. Valid codes can be absent — confirm with the national postal service.

Do you store the codes I look up?

No. Lookups go straight from your browser to the Zippopotam API, and we do not log or keep them.
