How to use this tool

1
Pick a drawing mode

Choose marker, line, polygon, or text label from the toolbar, then click the map. Lines and polygons record every click; double-click or press Finish to complete a shape.

2
Watch live measurements

While you draw, the panel shows the running length of lines, plus the perimeter and area of polygons, computed with great-circle math on a spherical Earth.

3
Refine your drawing

Use Undo to remove the last shape, or Clear to start over. Everything renders instantly on the map as you work.

4
Export your work

Press Export GeoJSON to download a standard .geojson file containing every marker, line, and polygon β€” ready for GIS software, Google Earth, or the GeoJSON viewer tool.

What people use this tool for

Plan a route sketch

Trace a proposed hiking trail, delivery run, or race course on the map and read off its exact length before you commit.

Example: A running club traces a 10K loop around the park and checks the distance before race day.
Outline a property or site

Draw a polygon around a plot of land, a festival ground, or a construction site to measure its area in square kilometers or miles.

Example: An event organizer outlines the festival field to estimate usable space for stages and stalls.
Annotate maps for presentations

Add labeled markers and regions to a map, export as GeoJSON, and bring the file into your own mapping or reporting workflow.

Example: A teacher marks historical sites on a city map to use in a classroom slideshow.

How it's calculated

Coordinates are recorded in WGS84 decimal degrees from each map click. Distances use the haversine formula along the great circle, and polygon areas are computed on the sphere, so measurements stay accurate at any zoom or latitude.

Frequently asked questions

Is the map drawer free to use?

Yes β€” drawing, measuring, and exporting are completely free, with no account or sign-up required.

How are distances and areas calculated?

Every measurement is computed on a spherical Earth model using great-circle math, so a line drawn near the poles is measured just as accurately as one at the equator.

What is GeoJSON and what can I do with the export?

GeoJSON is an open standard for geographic data. The exported file works in QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth, and most web mapping libraries, and you can re-open it with our GeoJSON viewer tool.

Are my drawings saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. Your drawing exists only in your browser session. Nothing is uploaded to a server β€” exporting downloads the file directly from your device.

Can I label points on the map?

Yes. Switch to label mode, type your text, and click the map β€” the label appears as map text you can position exactly where you want it.
