What people use this tool for

Common example

Click Tokyo β†’ Asia/Tokyo, UTC+09:00, no daylight saving

Practical use

Checking whether it is a reasonable hour to call Sydney from London

How it's calculated

Clicked coordinates are matched against IANA time-zone boundaries with an offline database (tz-lookup). Times render through the browser's Intl API with per-zone UTC offsets computed for the current date, so daylight saving is reflected automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the zone lookup?

It uses the IANA boundary database, the same source operating systems use β€” accurate to the real administrative boundaries.

Why does the offset table change through the year?

Many zones observe daylight saving, so their UTC offset shifts by an hour in summer. The table always shows the current offset.

What about places like China with one zone?

The whole country correctly resolves to Asia/Shanghai (UTC+08:00) despite spanning five geographic time bands.

Does it work for oceans?

No β€” time zones are defined for land. Clicking the ocean shows a note asking you to click on land.

Is an internet connection needed?

Only to load the page and map tiles. The zone lookup itself is fully offline.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

For everyday use they mark the same zero point; UTC is the precise atomic standard behind civil timekeeping.

Why do some zones have 30 or 45 minute offsets?

A few regions chose half-hour or 45-minute offsets historically, e.g. India (UTC+05:30) and Nepal (UTC+05:45).

Can I see the date as well as the time?

Yes β€” the result card shows the local weekday and date alongside the clock.
