Random Location Generator
Generate a statistically fair random point on the planet. Choose anywhere on Earth, land only, or inside a specific country — each point is sampled with true equal-area probability.
True equal-area sampling: latitude comes from the arcsine of a uniform variable, so every square kilometre of Earth is equally likely — small countries are not over-represented. Land checks use Natural Earth 110m boundaries; country names come from the same dataset.
How to use this tool
Anywhere on Earth, land only, or inside one country.
In country mode, start typing a name from the list.
Get coordinates in DD and DMS, plotted on the map.
What people use this tool for
Let chance pick your next adventure destination.
Random-point challenges for geography quizzes.
Unbiased geographic sampling for studies and simulations.
How it's calculated
Latitude is sampled via the arcsine of a uniform variable, giving true equal-area coverage of the sphere (naive uniform latitude would over-sample the poles). Land and country modes use rejection sampling against Natural Earth 110m country polygons with a local point-in-polygon test — no server or API involved.

Frequently asked questions
Is the randomness truly uniform over Earth's surface?
Yes — the arcsine method gives every square kilometre equal probability, unlike naive latitude sampling.
Why does 'land only' sometimes take a moment?
About 71% of samples are ocean and get rejected; the sampler retries until a land point is found.
Which countries are available?
All countries in the Natural Earth 110m dataset — type to filter the list.
How is 'inside a country' decided?
By a point-in-polygon test against the country's boundary polygons, including holes.
Can I use this for research sampling?
Yes — the equal-area property makes it suitable for unbiased geographic sampling.
Does it need the internet?
Country boundaries load once from a CDN; the sampling itself runs locally.
What coordinate formats are shown?
Decimal degrees and DMS for every generated point.
Is each click independent?
Yes — every generation is an independent random sample.
