Halfway Between Two Places

Enter two places and get the exact halfway point between them — the great-circle midpoint — pinned on an interactive map with distances from each side.

The midpoint is the true great-circle halfway point — the middle of the shortest path over the planet's surface, computed on the sphere. Both legs are equal by construction.

How to use this tool

1
Search for the first place

Type a city, address, or landmark and pick the match.

2
Search for the second place

Add the other location the same way.

3
Get the halfway point

The midpoint appears with coordinates and distances from both places.

What people use this tool for

Meeting in the middle

Find a fair rendezvous for friends or colleagues driving from different cities.

Relocation planning

See what sits halfway between your current home and a job offer.

Trip staging

Plan an overnight stop at the middle of a long drive.

How it's calculated

Places are geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. The midpoint is computed in 3D Cartesian space on the WGS84 sphere (converting lat/lng to XYZ, averaging, and converting back), which gives the true great-circle midpoint rather than a naive average of coordinates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the halfway point exactly equal distance from both places?

Yes — the great-circle midpoint is equidistant along the shortest path on Earth's surface.

Why not just average the latitudes and longitudes?

Averaging lat/lng directly distorts near the poles and across the antimeridian; the 3D-vector method is exact.

Can I use addresses, not just cities?

Yes — any place Nominatim can geocode, from landmarks to full street addresses.

Does the midpoint account for roads?

No — it is the geographic midpoint. Check a routing tool for the practical driving midpoint.

What shows on the map?

Three pins: both places and the halfway point, with the connecting path drawn between them.

Can I search places outside the US?

Yes — geocoding is worldwide via OpenStreetMap Nominatim.

How do I get coordinates of the midpoint?

The result panel shows decimal degrees and DMS for the halfway point.

Is my search data stored?

No — searches go to Nominatim's public API and results are computed in your browser.
