Driving Distance Calculator
Estimate the driving distance between two locations. Perfect for trip planning, fuel budgeting and logistics.
This page explains how the driving distance calculator works, the data and formulas behind it, and how to interpret the result. Great-circle distances are the shortest path over the Earth's surface - the route aeroplanes actually follow. They are the baseline every other distance estimate starts from, and are accurate to ~0.3% of the more complex ellipsoidal (WGS84) distance. The tool is one of 329 free, open tools on JoseFitani for maps and geography. It runs in your browser with no sign-up needed. Use the search field or click the map to drop a pin - the tool uses the Haversine formula on a sphere of radius 6,371 km, plus mode-specific detour factors for driving, walking and flight-time estimates and returns the result in seconds. Below you'll find a step-by-step guide, real use cases, the methodology, FAQs, and data sources.
Driving distances and times are estimates based on available route data. They do not account for traffic, roadworks, or detours β check live navigation information before traveling.
How to use this tool
Type your query, paste coordinates, or click on the map. The tool uses the Haversine formula on a sphere of radius 6,371 km, plus mode-specific detour factors for driving, walking and flight-time estimates to process your input locally in the browser.
The result appears instantly with the map showing your location. You can adjust by clicking elsewhere or searching a new place.

What people use this tool for
Drivers planning a long trip multiply the estimated driving distance by their vehicle's fuel consumption to budget petrol or diesel before leaving. Knowing the fuel cost up front removes a common source of holiday budget surprises and helps compare driving against flying or trains.
Delivery drivers and commuters deciding between alternative routes can compare estimated driving distances to pick the option that burns less fuel and takes less wear. Even a small per-trip saving compounds quickly over a working week of repeated journeys.
Freelancers and tradespeople who bill travel separately need a defensible distance figure when quoting a job. An independent estimate, produced before the visit, keeps the travel line-item transparent and avoids awkward renegotiation after the work is done.
Travellers weighing a road trip against a flight need the driving distance to make the cost comparison honest. Fuel, tolls, and wear on the car can be totalled against airfares only once the road kilometres are known, and the time trade-off becomes concrete too.
How it's calculated
Driving distance is approximated as 1.3x the great-circle distance, reflecting the average detour factor of paved roads worldwide. For precise routing, combine with a map service.
The calculation runs in your browser - no data is sent to our servers. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap (ODbL license), geocoding uses Nominatim (1 request/second limit), and elevation uses the Open-Elevation API backed by SRTM data. All are free, open services.
All calculations use the WGS84 datum (EPSG:4326), the same as GPS. For other datums (NAD27, NAD83, ETRS89), a separate conversion is needed. The difference is typically under 1 metre - negligible for most uses but important for survey-grade work.
The formulas match those in professional GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, Global Mapper), just in a browser-friendly form. For sub-metre accuracy, use professional software with ellipsoidal calculations. Results are shown in multiple units: km and miles for distance, kmΒ²/mΒ²/hectares/acres for area, metres and feet for elevation. Conversion factors are exact (1 mile = 1.609344 km), so the only error source is input precision.

Frequently asked questions
How is driving distance estimated?
We apply a 1.3x factor to the great-circle distance.
Can I calculate fuel cost?
Yes - enter your vehicle's consumption and local fuel price.
Why is driving distance longer than straight-line distance?
Roads follow terrain, skirt around obstacles, and detour through towns instead of cutting across the landscape. This calculator multiplies the great-circle distance by roughly 1.3 to model that real-world winding. In mountainous regions or around large water bodies, real roads can run even longer than the factor suggests.
How is the driving estimate actually calculated?
It starts from the straight-line (great-circle) distance between your two points and applies an approximate road-network factor of about 1.3. That makes it a planning estimate rather than live routing. Before you actually drive, check a mapping app that follows real roads, since local geography can push the true figure higher or lower.
Does it include traffic, roadworks, or closures?
No. The estimate knows nothing about congestion, construction zones, accidents, or seasonal road closures. For departure planning, add a buffer for rush hour and check live traffic on the day. The distance figure itself is unaffected by traffic, but your travel time certainly is.
Can it calculate toll costs for my route?
No, tolls are not modelled. Toll prices depend on the exact route taken, the vehicle class, and local pricing that changes over time. Use the distance estimate together with a route planner to identify toll roads, then look up their current charges separately.
Does it handle one-way streets and detours?
Not specifically. The estimate assumes a reasonably direct route between the two points and cannot know about one-way systems, temporary detours, or awkward junctions. In dense old city centres with complex layouts, expect the real driven distance to come out a little higher.
Is the estimate good enough for mileage expense claims?
It is a planning estimate, so treat it as a sense-check rather than a filing document. Most employers and tax authorities expect the actual distance driven, taken from your odometer or a route log. If your claim differs wildly from this estimate, double-check your records before submitting.
Do I need internet to use this calculator?
Only for place-name search. Resolving a typed city or address into coordinates queries an online gazetteer, which needs a connection. The distance math itself runs locally in your browser, so pasting coordinates directly works without any search.
Why does another tool give a different driving distance?
Different tools use different data and methods: live routers trace actual road networks turn by turn, while this calculator applies an estimation factor to the straight-line distance. Expect agreement within roughly 10 to 20 percent. For the definitive number on a specific trip, a live router with current road data wins.
