Geocoding & Place Finders

Every map tool starts with the same basic question: where is this place, exactly? This collection answers it. The Latitude & Longitude Finder takes a place name and returns its coordinates — search is powered by the Nominatim geocoding service, with suggestions as you type. The Reverse Geocoder works in the opposite direction: click any point on the interactive map and it returns the coordinates in decimal degrees and degrees-minutes-seconds, plus the reverse-geocoded address for that location so you can verify what you clicked. The City Finder, County Finder and Country Finder locate administrative places by name and show them on the map with their coordinates.

The map is the heart of these tools: click to drop a pin, drag it to fine-tune the position, and the coordinates and address update live. Everything runs in the browser against open geocoding data — no accounts, no API keys, no usage limits to worry about for normal use.

Two guides explain the technology underneath. The geocoding introduction covers what geocoding and reverse geocoding actually are, how place names are matched to coordinates, why the same name can return several candidates (think Springfield), and what affects match quality — from spelling to how complete the underlying map data is for a region. The GPS explainer describes how satellite positioning produces those coordinates in the first place: the constellation of satellites, trilateration from timing signals, and the factors that limit accuracy, from urban canyons to atmospheric delay.

Use these tools to grab coordinates for a spreadsheet, verify an address location, find where a city or county boundary sits, or get the lat/long you need as input for the distance and coordinate tools elsewhere on this site. Journalists verifying a photo's claimed location can pin the coordinates and cross-check the address. Real-estate researchers can confirm that a listing's coordinates actually fall inside the advertised neighborhood before scheduling a visit.
